The Table Mountain, a symbolic icon of Cape Town, South Africa, can now be easily and beautifully viewed with a modern cableway, the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway, which is a new “Rotair” car that can carry 65 passengers, climbing from the city to the top of the legendary mountain. Cape Town Mountain’s cable cars are one of Cape Town’s most popular tourist attractions with approximately 800,000 people a year, as it promises a popular way to see some panoramic views of the city.
Going up with the Aerial Cableway, the floors of the car rotates slowly through 360 degrees during the ascent or descent, allowing the passengers a 360 degrees view of the whole site, so they can easily take pictures of every angle of the ride climb up to the top. Through their journey, the passengers will be definitely pleased to see the top of Table Mountain National Park as well as the unforgettable view of Cape Town, Table Bay and Robben Island to the north, and the Atlantic seaboard to the west and south, even the station offers magnificent view of the ocean and beautiful beaches of Camps Bay.
Aerial Cableway is run on a double cable (1200 m in length) making them much more stable in high wind, and giving a faster journey of 4–5 minutes to the summit. However, keep in mind that this ride is closed when there is too much wind, not only because this may be necessary for operational, safety or security reasons, but windy weather will also give a very poor visibility to the passengers.
The best way to get to the lower cable station, if you do not have your own transportation, is by riding the iconic three-wheeler transportation, which is similar to the famous becak, tuk-tuk, trishaw, auto, rickshaw, and other forms of novelty transport in many Eastern countries. The lower cable station is on Tafelberg Road near Kloof Nek, while the upper cable station is on the westernmost end of the Table Mountain plateau.
Lastly, to have experience with Aerial Cableway is absolutely unthinkable, not only because the top of Table Mountain is one of the highlights of Cape Town with its spectacular views, but there are also lots of food options at the top to enjoy the evening sunset. Wines by the glass and cheese, along with really good custom made sandwiches.
