Recognized as one of the manmade wonders of the modern world, Machu Picchu is an impressive place in many respects. It is those destinations you have to put on the list of places to see before you die. In 2011, the city celebrated 100 years of its discovery. Machu Picchu is a pre-Columbian 15th-century Inca site located in the Cusco Region of Peru, South America.
Known as the “Lost City of the Incas”, Machu Picchu exudes energy that allows visitors to unravel a little bit about people who kept very advanced knowledge, especially for the time they lived. The archaeological site is 2450 meters above sea level and was settled between the years 1450 to 1540. The origin families who lived there years ago grew mainly corn and potatoes and left the city, probably caused by some diseases, before the arrival of the Spaniards.
Machu Picchu was all built by stones, and most of them are between 10kg and 15kg – some weigh up to 20 tons. It’s amazing experience of visiting the ruins and finding the perfect fit of the walls. A curiosity that makes it even more interesting and surprising to know is that the residents were small people whose height, on average, men 1.55 m and women 1.25 m. By knowing this fact, it is almost impossible not to wonder how a place so grand was built.
Most famous photos of Machu Picchu are its panorama, which gives a beautiful view of the place, but the trip does not end there. After walking through the lost city, you will see below, the lowest point; then yes incredible scenery. Walking through Machu Picchu means knowing the history, the way of life, and be amazed at the knowledge of mathematics, astronomy and acoustics that the Incas had. Definitely an unforgettable ride!
